Patients who have had dental implants often wonder whether these tiny titanium posts and the replacement teeth on top of them require special care. Truth is that the daily care of dental implants is very similar (if not identical) to the care of natural teeth, since they should be kept clean and plaque-free at all times. However, special instructions are provided after an implant operation to ensure that they heal successfully over time.
At Ikon Dental Suite, we always provide customised aftercare instructions to all of our patients who are having dental implants in Ealing. Patients who have implant surgery should follow the specific care instructions they are given by their dentist or contact us for further questions and/or clarifications. In the meantime, we have assembled a few guidelines on how to take care and maintain your dental implants in Ealing.
Keeping up with your dental implants after the operation
After the surgical procedure, which is carried out under local anaesthesia and possibly sedation, your dentist will place a gauze over the implant sites in order to control bleeding. Pressing down on a few gauzes is enough to stop bleeding, though if bleeding continues for a few hours after the operation, patients you are advised to contact us as this may be a sign of infection.
Most patients will feel minimal pain or discomfort after the operation, but this can easily be dealt with with prescription drugs or simple painkillers. However, be careful not to place the drugs directly on the gum tissue since they can cause serious burns. Your dentist will recommend a diet of soft foods and drinks during the first days after the implant operation; however, patients are advised against using a straw for a few days. Gradually, you will be allowed to re-introduce solid foods into your diet, being careful not to chew too hard in the area of the dental implants.
Initially avoid brushing or flossing the dental implants, but brush and floss the rest of your teeth normally. As soon as sensitivity goes away, you can return to your normal oral care routine, together with the help and supervision of our dentists.
