Why fixed orthodontics (braces)?

Fixed braces have been used to straighten teeth in one form or another for many years.

They are an effective way of straightening teeth and correcting mild, moderate and complex bite alignment cases.

Modern versions are lightweight, less intrusive and more comfortable than their predecessors. So if you are looking for an alternative to removable clear aligner-style orthodontics we have several options for you to choose from. Find out more below…

Fixed stainless steel (metal) braces

Our Ealing patients can benefit from traditional metal braces which are permanently attached to the front of the teeth for the duration of their treatment.

They utilise a series of brackets and archwires which when tightened apply gentle pressure to the teeth gradually forcing them into their newly aligned position. Proven to fix a variety of mild to complex bite alignments they remain a popular choice for kids and teens.

Incognito (lingual) braces

Also known as invisible braces, incognito (lingual braces are attached to the rear of the teeth so they remain invisible when you speak, talk or smile.

Lingual (incognito) braces can be highly customised to facilitate the movement of individual teeth or to move teeth collectively. Incognito braces can also change the height of teeth, close teeth gaps or correct tooth rotation. Here at IKON Dental Specialists our specialist orthodontist Dr Sarbjit Cholia is experienced in all aspects of lingual braces.

Damon Braces

As already mentioned, traditional fixed metal braces rely on the manual tightening of archwires to straighten teeth.

This is performed regularly by your dentist or orthodontist. Damon braces, on the other hand, are what is known as ‘self-ligating’. In other words, they contain a sliding mechanism used to hold the archwires in place.

As your teeth gradually shift, the mechanism responds to this and gently guides the teeth into their correct position. As a result, Damon self-ligating braces not only move teeth faster but require few adjustments.

Our IKON orthodontic specialist is a certified Damon systems provider and gives patients the choice of metal or clear self-ligating braces.

commonly asked questions about

Fixed orthodontic treatment in Ealing

  • Am I too old to get braces?

There is no age limit to getting braces and while it might be seen as a treatment for younger teens, the fact is that more and more adults understand the benefits and are undergoing orthodontic care with fixed braces in and around the West London area.

  • Do I need to limit my diet when wearing fixed braces?

It would be prudent to avoid foods that might become lodged between the brackets such as popcorn kernels and nuts or sticky chewy foods such as toffee.

  • How do I keep my braces clean?

In addition to brushing the front of your teeth, you should also brush along the top and underside of your braces paying particular attention to the bracket area where food can become lodged. It may pay to invest in a water flossing device. These are readily available and can get into those hard-to-reach places that a toothbrush may not be able to.

  • What problems can fixed orthodontic braces treat?

Fixed braces can treat a variety of issues including

    • Overbites, underbites & crossbites
    • Overlapping teeth
    • Crowded teeth and
    • Misaligned teeth

Fixed braces can also close slight tooth gaps and in some instances alter tooth height.

Amazing service from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave. Pam is one of the most caring and helpful hygienists I have seen in a long time and my teeth are gleaming which I cannot thank Pam enough for!
