We’ve got you covered

As you get older, you will notice that your dentist in Ealing is starting to spend more time preserving your teeth, stopping them falling victim to gum disease and if they do fall out, finding ways to replace them.

At Ikon Dental Suite, your dentist in Ealing, we take a keen interest in gum disease, which is now more likely to be the cause of tooth loss in adults than decay.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by the acids given off by plaque, the film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth. It hardens into tartar and that gives off acids too, only you can’t brush it away, it has to be removed by scraping.

The acids start by irritating and inflaming your gums. The inflammation pulls them away from your teeth and they are likely to bleed easily when you brush them. At this stage it is pretty easy to get rid of gum disease. We’ll probably spot it before you do, and then you need to follow a diligent routine of brushing and flossing to allow the gums to heal.

It’s what happens next that is harder to solve. The gums can recede and pull away from the teeth, forming pockets under which these acids can start to get at the bone that houses your teeth. The acids eat away at the bone, making it gnarly and loosening the teeth in their sockets until they fall out.
